Is My Rider Ready? (Entry Standard)
For safety and group flow, JDT riders must be able to:
- Comfortably descend intermediate (blue) trails at speed, in control — handling berms, small drops, rocky/steep sections comfortably and in control
- Climb for extended periods (up to ~1 km) without dismounting.
- Maintain pace/resilience suitable for longer, more technical rides.
JDT suits Upper Intermediate riders. Strong Intermediates are welcome if they meet all of the above.
Skill Level Guide (context)
Upper Intermediate
- Comfortable on all blue trails at speed and in control; can safely navigate some lower‑end black features when appropriate; manages moderate roots/rocks and roll‑downs; developing manuals, berm speed, and tech climbing/descending.
Bike & Equipment Requirements
Because JDT rides faster, rougher terrain, bikes must be safe and suitable for advanced trail use:
Recommended bike spec:
- Quality front suspension (rear suspension strongly recommended).
- Hydraulic disc brakes in excellent working order.
- Durable drivetrain suitable for rough, high‑speed riding.
- Quality pedals; gears well‑adjusted and shifting cleanly.
- Tyres with solid tread.
- 27.5″ wheels or larger.
- Regularly serviced and well‑maintained.
Minimum prep for every session:
- Bike passes a safety check: both brakes functional, bolts tight, gears shifting correctly, tyres inflated.
- Rider brings at least 1.5 L water and can carry it while riding.
- Rider carries a spare tube suitable for their wheels (including tubeless setups). We suggest strapping a tube to the frame so it’s never forgotten.
These are minimum requirements. If a rider presents with an unsafe bike or a flat with no compatible tube, we may need to remove them from the ride and contact parents — which impacts the whole group.
Protective Equipment
Mandatory (all sessions):
- Correctly fitting Australian Standards–approved helmet.
- MTB‑specific footwear.
- Full‑finger gloves (recommended every week; compulsory on road trips).
Additional road‑trip mandatory items:
- Full‑face helmet — compulsory.
- Knee pads — compulsory.
Recommended:
- Knee pads (compulsory on road trips; optional other weeks).
- Elbow pads.
