 Amy Gillett

Amy Gillett was a true Australian champion representing Australia at the Athens Olympics in rowing and internationally as a champion cyclist.  The nation grieved when she was killed in Germany in July 2005.  Her five companions have overcome major trauma and are on the road to recovery.

  Amy Gillett 1976-2005

Before turning to cycling Amy had a successful career in rowing that saw her represent Australia at the Atlanta Olympic Games. After that she chose cycling as her sport and was inspirational in her pursuit of excellence. She was a dedicated, committed and talented cyclist but sport was not her only pursuit and her commitment to academic endeavours was widely acknowledged. Her love of life and all it could offer stand as an example worth following.

The Amy Gillett Foundation was formed to honour Amy’s memory and create a lasting legacy in her name. Aims of the foundation include road safety, athlete support in the form of a scholarship awarded annually, & to support Amy’s teammates injured in the tragedy that killed Amy.

The Amy Gillett Foundation has already received a huge amount of support from government both State & Federal, the corporate sector, the cycling industry, and many committed and generous individuals.

The Amy Gillett Foundation was established by Amy’s husband Simon to improve safety on our roads for both cyclists and motorists. Government, Australian companies and individuals have been generous in their support.

The Amy Gillett Foundation:

  ·         addresses the need for respect by, and of, all road users, and

·         promotes techniques to reduce risks and manage emotion on the bike or behind the wheel.

Part of Amy’s legacy will be to address the trauma that results from failure in these areas. As a means of carrying out its primary mission, the Amy Gillett Foundation will:

·         establish an international cycling scholarship for the next generation of Amy Gilletts, and assist the recovery of the five cyclists injured in the crash.
